Since the trade war between South Korea and Japan broke out in July 4, more Koreans are seeking to visit the disputed Dokdo Islets, which Japan maintains a territorial claim, as patriotic sentiments run high and many Koreans have boycotted trips to neighboring Japan compared to previous years. Also known as Takeshima islands in Japan, the tiny group of islets, located around 200 kilometers off South Koreas eastern coast, has become a popular destination during the summer holidays for Koreans. According to reports, Korean tour companies have provided special tours while the number of visitors rose by 29.7 percent this year to 172,500 people compared to 132,900 during the same period of last year.
